Fair trade is a broadly known, global, nonprofit organization with a strong presence in the UK that supports small-scale farmers and workers in developing countries, who are marginalized from trade in various ways.
What difference does it make to buy fairtrade?
'Buying Fairtrade Gold makes a real difference to the lives of miners, their families, and communities. Jewellery with the Fairtrade Gold Stamp is extra special. Buying it means you know the small-scale and artisanal miners were paid a fair price, giving them financial security.
Fairtrade certification means these small scale-miners meet Fairtrade Standards. This can help them to improve their mining and business practices as well as open the market to generate more sales on better terms. The Standards include strict requirements on working conditions, health, and safety, handling chemicals, women’s rights, child labour and protection of the environment.' source:www.fairtrade.org.uk
Is all gold fair trade?
Unfortunately, not all the jewellery that is available in the market is fairtrade, and it would never be since we are talking about minorities.
'Much of the gold needed for products and manufacturing comes from newly-mined sources and the rest is from scrap or recycled sources. Of this newly-mined gold, around a fifth comes from artisanal and small-scale mines and the rest is from medium and large-scale mines.
Fairtrade is focusing on artisanal and small-scale mines that are generally made up of individuals, small groups of people, families, and co-operatives who extract gold from the ground with minimal or no machinery. It is back-breaking work and often unregulated.' source: ambassador.fairtrade.org.uk
Throughout all of these processes, Fairtrade Gold is kept separate from other sources of gold so that it can be traced into the jeweller’s business. All products made by the use of fair trade precious metals carry a stamp/jewell mark from the assay office known as the fair trade mark; this is an in-depended consumer label licensed by the fair trade foundation, in order for the products to prove their authenticity and origin.
'As all life forms, we are destined to create. That ability carries great responsibility; since our choices shape our identity but also affect the lives of many others'
